Super-Fan of Bernie Sanders. SPLC adherent. He wrote 27 anti-Republican letters to Belleville News-Democrat. "Wrote, Trump is a Traitor. Trump Has Destroyed Our Democracy. It's Time to Destroy Trump & Co." Belonged to numerous far left Facebook hate groups like "Terminate the Republican Party", "The Road To Hell Is Paved With Republicans".
The FBI took over the investigation, had found a list of names, including those of Republican Congressmen Mo Brooks, Jeff Duncan and Trent Franks, in Hodgkinson's pocket, and found six Republican congressmens names written on a piece of paper found in an Alexandria storage locker rented to Hodgkinson, and said, "it was too early to ascribe a motive for the shootings", despite knowing all this.

Police had dealt with him on 6 prior occasions. History of beating his foster daughter and charged with domestic battery, but charges dropped. Another time he was firing a rifle in his back yard (a crime), got off with a warning. A felony conviction would have prevented him from legally acquiring a gun.
