Tom BrokawHispanics and Conservatives
Brokaw slurred Republicans as racists, then said something that was racist (but true) about Hispanics, and later retracted.
Brokaw on Meet the Press barbed Republicans with a lie, '[they] don't want brown grandbabies'. And then slurred hispanics with, "Hispanics should work harder at assimilation". When confronted on the former, he ignored his own lie... but confronted on the latter, he apologized for telling the truth. Full Brokaw.

Overview

❝ But the fact is, on the Republican side, a lot of people see the rise of an extraordinary, important, new constituent in American politics, Hispanics, who will come here and all be Democrats. Also, I hear, when I push people a little harder, “Well, I don’t know whether I want brown grandbabies.” I mean, that’s also a part of it. It’s the intermarriage that is going on and the cultures that are conflicting with each other. I also happen to believe that the Hispanics should work harder at assimilation. That’s one of the things I’ve been saying for a long time. You know, they ought not to be just codified in their communities but make sure that all their kids are learning to speak English, and that they feel comfortable in the communities. And that’s going to take outreach on both sides, frankly. ❞

While appearing on Meet the Press:

  • Brokaw was trying to character assassinate the deplorable Republicans by saying they, “don’t want brown grand-babies,”
  • But to try to sound balanced about that insult, he also quipped that “Hispanics should work harder at assimilation.”
  • When challenged on the former, he ignored the complaints -- he believes that Republicans are uniquely racist because history shows the opposite
  • When challenged on the latter, he apologized for the racist quip, because it was the only true thing he said.

Facts[edit | edit source]

  • I have mixed race family full of conservatives, my Step Dad is black, I have many cousins that are Mexican, I've never heard any of the family imply "I don't know whether I want brown babies". (They're more concerned they grow up unemployed basement-dwelling failures, aka Democrats).
    • My cousins adopted an African child (browner than Hispanics).
    • My family accepted Marcus (Step Dad) who is black
    • I'm Iranian, and was very brown growing up (as was my Dad... or my Grandma's Italian family
    • There's no polls or evidence that seems to support the claim that conservatives don't want brown babies
    • When you compare Texas (Republican) to California (Democrat) you find that there's far more Mexican integration and mixing and success in all phases of the culture in Texas. In California, Mexicans are for picking food, cleaning it (or your home) and preparing it. In Texas, there are many latino bosses and CEO's.

So Tom's slur is as ignorant as it is offensive. (See: Mexican American Descrimination)

  • There was also the ignorance that the Mexicans all vote democrat. While it's true that uneducated (less educated) people often do vote Democrat, Mexicans are more mixed than the igno-left thinks. While it's hard to tease just Mexicans out of the Latino vote, we know that Bush got 44% of the latino vote, Trump was 29% (and strengthening in polls -- more in red states like Texas/Florida). And the longer they stay here, the more likely they are to grow and learn how radical and offensive the Democrats are.

So Tom was wrong on his claim that they, "will come here and all be Democrats".

  • Of course the left doesn't care about that. They only got outraged because he pointed out that creating a culture-within-a-culture (Mexican communities with Spanish as the first language) might be a bad thing for them and the rest of us.
    • All communities that create enclaves instead of integrating are going to be limiting themselves, and their success. They're narrowing their market. Latinos/Hispanics are not immune. In fact, because of their proximity, and quantity, they are the worst at this. There are many areas where you can live in Mexico-lite in some pockets in the USA.
    • Broad brushing all Hispanics is a bit racist, especially without all the good things the culture/people bring (which is a lot -- and I love a lot of latino cultures and diversity). But it's not wrong that this is a real problem that holds "them" back. (Those that choose to live in the expat communities).
    • Those of us to want more integration, aren't doing it to whitewash them or destroy their community. Quite the opposite. It's that I want to give them and their kids more opportunities.

So Brokaw insulted conservatives unfairly. He insulted Hispanics fairly and apologized. This is the Brokaw way.

While the term goes back 100 years, the history is summed up well by Sharyl Attkisson.

NBC
Which is the most biased news? Hard to tell. But here's some of NBC's lowlights.

Tom Brokaw
Once considered the paragon of a fair Journalism, history shows how partisan and biased he was all along.

Texas Diversity
I find Texas more diverse (or integrated) that New York (where I went to School), or California (where I grew up).
