Midway (2019)
Hollywooded remake of the 1942 Battle of Midway during World War II. Not perfect history, but perfectly watchable.

I'm not a fan of Hollywood doctoring up perfectly interesting stories. And this took quite a few liberties, but fewer than the 1976 version of the film. It most made the characters a little one-dimensional, made the scenery a little more interesting than it was, and got a few little details/people/timelines wrong. So it wasn't too bad, making it was a worthy telling of a story. Not quite a documentary, but a quite watchable Hollywood'ed version of one. So it wasn't the best war film, nor the worst -- it was just a nice throwback with a lot of historical accuracy on what happened in WWII, and a good popcorn film.
Film Critics
If you want to see leftist bias in media, you just have to look at all the examples of how far off from their reviewers are from their viewers. I use the spread as a predictor of whether I'll like a film. Big spread with audience over critics? I'm going to like it. But big spread with critics over audience? I'll usually side with audience.

Midway - This got a 44/92 split between reviewers/viewers. The reviewers didn't like it because it was a bit of a traditional pro-American WWII film, and anti-American post-modern snowflakes hate that patriotism or America doing anything right. But viewers enjoyed the film anyways. |
