Melissa and I started watching an indian movie on Netflix, and I said within 5 minutes, “this is Forest Gump”. Something just felt the same, even if everything was different.
And looked it up… it was exactly that, the Indian remake of Forest Gump. “Laal Singh Chaddha”…. same beautiful story.
It is fun looking at another culture through a remake of a popular movie, that was famous for all the pop culture references of my lifetime. Subtitled, and I didn't get all the references (had to look some up)... but if you liked the Original, and want to get a little Indian culture, you should like this one. Seemed appropriate to watch for Diwali tomorrow.
Had to read up on the anti-Sikh riots. I didn't know the Sikhs killed Indira Gandhi, or the retaliation. (I knew of the violence in general, just not specific causes -- I thought the majority was Muslim/Hindu, and only peripherally knew of some bigotry towards Sikhs).
But you get to see all sorts of sites and monuments and scenery in India. And little tastes of the culture by what they choose to put in or out. (Like the songs they decided to add, or how they tweaked some scenes).
I liked the original, but this might have been slightly better. (I'll go back a rewatch the original). Definitely the best movie I saw all year (2022).

If you want to see leftist bias in media, you just have to look at all the examples of how far off from their reviewers are from their viewers. I use the spread as a predictor of whether I'll like a film. Big spread with audience over critics? I'm going to like it. But big spread with critics over audience? I'll usually side with audience.

Laal Singh Chaddha - Reviewers gave this a measly 65%, while audiences gave it a 91%. Reviewers seemed bitter that it was true-to-form (Corny) remake when reviewers wanted them to change/modernize the story. And that it didn't twist modern India problems (with Islamic violence) in a more contraversial way. Sort of missing the point of the film. And they whined about the pacing, which like the original wasn't exactly a Michael Bay film. |
