It's funny as heck, if you know nothing about Texas vs California power, or helicopters, or Mars.
It's funny as heck, if you know nothing about Texas vs California power, or helicopters, or Mars. (a) Mars drones in lower gravity has little in common with Earth (b) California is run by Democrats and has 5x the energy costs and lower reliability (c) Texas's grid problems are mostly that the Fed won't let them on the national grid, because of deregulation.

""We're flying electric helicopters on Mars yet you can't turn on your clothes dryer in Texas. That's because scientists are in charge of Mars, and republicans are in charge of Texas.

Facts[edit | edit source]

  • Mars has lower gravity (and atmosphere) so a little drone on Mars has virtually nothing in common with Helicopters here on Earth.
  • California has more power problems than Texas. And it’s been run by leftists for 50 years.
  • I’ve lived both places and have property in both places.
    • My cost per KHw in Texas is $0.11. My cost in San Jose was $0.39 for the first few units, but if I used more than my neighbors (which everyone does, the way the bills are calculated) later units and prime time shoots up to $0.43 - 0.54/KWh..… so can be paying 5x as much.
    • Brownouts were more common in California than in Houston (at least where I live). In both frequency and duration.
    • Most of the brownouts in Texas are because of extreme weather events (Hurricanes and above-ground lines, or once in 5-10 year freezes). In California, it’s yearly wind, fires, or under-capacity due to them eliminating their Nuclear and all other options except ”Green” and being dependent on neighboring states to provide for them.
  • The biggest problems with Texas’s grid is with the Federal government. They won’t let them connect up to the other grids (even for fail-over), because they don’t like the deregulation / free’er market in Texas that allow them to drive down costs. If the Fed didn't block them, Texas could just spike buy on the spot market like California and would have fewer surge problems.
  • As it is, Texas is working on fixing its problems -— and California is still working on making its problems worse. (That doesn’t mean I think Texas completely has their shit together. But they’re still MUCH better than California on that).
  • In Houston, I have a natural gas power plant (Generac) in case the power does go out. Like it did in the big freeze a year or two ago. Since the same house costs 1/4th-1/5th as much, you can afford that little luxury. During that, my energy costs were still less than in California, despite twice the size of the house and more extreme weather, I have an Electric car, and I can afford to keep temps in my house more bearable.

If you know energy costs are 4-5x as much in California, and they have a worse reliability record than Texas, then ask yourself why the Meme didn't use California and Democrats as the example of funny? All answers you can come up with, show why this isn't that funny. Either the meme was based on ignorance (they didn't know the basics of the topic), or it was based on malice (they did, and wrote it this way for partisan reasons, making it unfunny to everyone who knows anything about the topic).

So other than Texas is 1/5th as much in costs as California, more reliable, and its problems are made by the Fed, whereas Californias are self-made... other than that, good meme.

Why the left can't meme
The basis of humor is unexpected truth, and a lack of malicious intent.
