Canadian Trade

Canada has unfair trade practices with U.S. and threw a shit fit when Trump tried to make things more fair.
Canada's tax and regulatory environment makes it hard to compete fairly, so they cheat with tariffs. Canada had 270% tariff on American Dairy, and 45% on Steel/Aluminum, etc., so Trump tariffed their steel and aluminum back and got a fairer USMCA to replace NAFTA.

Facts[edit | edit source]

  • Canada had unfair trade practices with the U.S. Trump had enough and said either more open (Free) trade, or reciprocal tariffs (fair Trade). Trudeau tantrum'd because he wanted unfair trade in his advantage (tariffs on American goods/services but none back).
  • Trudeau made a stink behind Trump's back at the G7 summit, but never to the larger man's face: because that's the kind of man Justin is, and Canada is for putting him in power.
  • The FakeNews (NYT, WaPo, Canadian Press) took the anti-American (anti-Trump) position and defended Canada (and tried to start a boycott of American goods), even though Canada was using their preferred trading status to pass through Chinese goods/steel/etc. to get around the U.S. tariffs on China.
  • Trump was able to renegotiate NAFTA and replace it with the less unfair USMCA, which was to America's benefit, and the whole thing went away.

Conclusion[edit | edit source]

Outlets/individuals that take Canada's position in all this (instead of America's), are missing the point (or intentionally distracting from it). That Canada does have protectionist policies and industries.

There's a slight counter-argument that while we do have a trade-goods imbalance, the U.S. makes up for it on services (we do). But that't just because America attracts better talent at better prices than Canadian system -- and misses the point that if your protect your industry from competing with us, then we have every right and responsibility to do it back. If Canada is going to do that for things like Milk Products (which they somehow consider vital national interest), then we're going to do it back to things like Steel and Aluminum.

You can like/hate fair-trade and trade-wars (I'm not a fan myself), but at least be honest enough to admit what is happening and why. It was never what the Press and left pretended.
