Texas institution, famous for being fresh, clean, cheap, and tasty. Like In-N-Out but bigger and varied menu.
This is a Texas institution (pronounced Waterburger), famous for being fresh, clean, cheap, and tasty. They taste like the In-N-Out of Texas (and the south), just a little bigger and a broader menu. It has such a cult-like following, and long lines. While the basic burger is like In-N-Out, they have chicken, fish, breakfast, spicy sauce (optional), and more variety.

They have franchises, and are a fast food establishment, fast, efficient, clean and tasty. But with a wider menu than an In-N-Out, and the quality varies a little but, from every bit as good, to close. The only choice for vegetarians is grilled cheese (and fries). They are a great-tasting classic fast-food burger (w/Shakes and Fries), not quite as inexpensive as In-N-Out, but a lot more options to customize -- with peppers or spice, or different personalities/seasonal burgers. (Green hatch chili, etc). Their spicy ketchup is delicious. If you want a fast food burger, it's a reliable go to. If both were equidistant, I'd go to Whataburger more often than In-N-Out because of the broader menu.

There's also a couple variants of What-A-Burger, or What A Burger Drive-in, that cause some name conflict -- but they were often regional and founded similar times, so they all exist and there isn't much customer confusion as they don't overlap in the same geography.
