Nocebo Effect

Fear, stress, or thinking that a product will not work, will increase the chances that it won't work and will cause harm.
This is something we talk about, but rarely think about: I can tell you of a side effect of a drug, and then give you a sugar pill, and many people will get the side effect out of fear of the side effect. While sychogenic, it can induce measurable changes in the body.

There's also the counter to the nocebo effect, the better known Placebo Effect -- which is an imagined medicine or positive effecting compound, that will result in better outcomes, even if there's only an inert substance administered.

Avicenna and the two lambs[edit | edit source]

Avicenna was a Persian scientist who lived 1000+ years ago.

Legends say that he put two lambs in separate cages with the same weight, health conditions, feed, environment, and so on. But only one lamb could see a wolf that was put in a third cage.

Over months the lamb that could see the threat became cranky, restless, weak, lost weight and eventually died. The wolf did not pose any physical danger, but this was beyond the lamb's perception. And just the perceived threat (constant fear/worry) was enough to harm the lamb.

Now with that in mind, think of the consequences to 330 million Americans, who are told a disease with the death rate of the flu, is going to kill them if they don't stay locked up in their homes, wear ineffective cloth masks, and stop working out or doing things that give them stress releif. The left murdered hundreds of thousands of people for thier political agenda. This is a great article on the subject: Dr. Simon on Nocebo and COVID.
