NYT and other progressive institutions loved and respected National Socialism (circa 1939). Central planning, public-private partnership, tax and spend ideology all aligned with The New Deal. The Nazi's were also saying great things about FDR, and copying the DNC on laws for segregation, since they aligned on so many things.
