| Comparing Dogs to Retarded Children, calling himself a "House Nigger", getting Milo Yiannopoulos cancelled, Maher was not without controversies.
After 9/11, Bush's speach said, "we'll find the cowards that did this". Maher said the Terrorists were not cowardly, "We have been the cowards. Lobbing cruise missiles from 2,000 miles away. That's cowardly. Staying in the airplane when it hits the building. Say what you want about it. Not cowardly." That (and prior controversies) got FedEx and Sears to pull advertisements from his shows, others followed, and his Politically Incorrect show was canceled the next year. HBO recreated it with "Real Time": they didn't need sponsors beyond an audience. So Bill was freed to bomb throw against America and right wing, all he wanted. |
- Maher was a stand-up comedian that got a few character-acting parts until the early 90's when he parlayed that into a late-night Comedy-Central show called Politically Incorrect (10:00pm slot).
- By 1997 he had enough of a cult following that he got moved to ABC, and he worked that until controversy in 2001 (after 9/11) got the show canceled (2002).
- Maher recreated his schtick on HBO with the show "Real Time with Bill Maher" which was just a rebranded clone of his Politically Incorrect show.
I don't mind Maher, as much as his contemporaries, as he's the least insane of leftist comedians/commentarians/polemics. But I don't like dishonesty or when he pretends to be centrist, or worse, Libertarian. He's a soft-left polemic, in a sea of hard-left polemics. He does give conservatives a voice on his show, but he will almost always side with the leftists view, and take cheap shots when he gets the opportunity. (Just usually not so much so, that they won't come on again). And like all "fair" shows run by the left, the conservatives will be outnumbered.
Left-wing (authoritarian / anti-libertarian) views[edit | edit source]
- single-payer healthcare (medicare for all)
- contempt for the second amendment
- pro-Fake-environmentalism
- Against the death penalty
- Contempt for marriage and traditional values
- Has contempt for Religion (but especially Christianity)
- supported Obama, and only hit Obama for not being far-left enough
- went further left later and supports the Democratic NationalSocialist Bernie Sanders
- hates Donald Trump, and criticized all his policies that reduced taxes, gave more power back to the people
- virtually all his writers, friends(and associates) are lefties like Al Franken, Michael Moore, he appears on left-wing shows (like Joy Behar, Keith Olberman, Chris Matthews, Chris Rock, etc.)
- he is against all conservative wars/actions and tends to excuse left-wing incursions/wars, though he is a bit non-interventionist
- he still has contempt for conservatives on his shows and outside (and hits them with more venom than worse behaving lefties)
- he still spins things with the same propaganda techniques of disinformation (lies of omission or commission) that most lefty late-night comedians do
Moderate views[edit | edit source]
- legalizing drugs, gambling, and prostitution.
- A lot of Marxists (authoritarian left) support hedonism as long as it tears down traditional values (society's belief systems): so that's not a good differentiator for being right, centrist or libertarian
- more pro-Israel than the BDS (Boycott, Divestment and Sanction) leftists
- he doesn't like the NSA/domestic spying as much as the far left
- He supports BLM/Antifa type racist and division (or calling Conservatives all White Supremacists), but will occasionally admit they go too far (he's far left, just not as far of left as some of them)
- He is against Political Correctness which morphed into the even worse "Woke" movement or "MeToo" movements
Conclusion[edit | edit source]
Bill Maher is:
- a old school left-winger, just a hedonist comedian that doesn't want to be constrained by Political Correctness, Woke Mob, or anything that would put norms/restrictions/consequences on his behavior (though he will mock others for not conforming to those standards)
- Maher is more moderate and sane that his far-left contemporaries, and thus he is more to the right and centrist than they are -- but that still leaves him way, way, way to the left of most of the nation.
- he does the usual left-wing game of trying to pretend that he's more moderate/centrist than he is (and gaslight those that disagree) -- whether that's because in his echo chamber he is what he claims, and thus he believes it... or wether he's lying to broaden his appeal... is open to interpretation
- He appeals to the young and stupid, disenfranchized, and generally left wing -- just a little bit broader and more rationally than Jon Stewart crowd
- He occasionally says intelligent things, especially when criticizing his own side (the left) from going too far. What matters is why he does it. (a) for the ratings zinger (b) to get attention (c) if he reigned them in and helped them win more of their left wing agenda (d) all of the above.
